Science! Beaver by the dam

In Riverfront Park, across from the Red Lion, this guy was just swimming in circles. Usually beavers are nocturnal.

When they are startled or angry the slap their tails on the water loudly. This beaver did not slap.

Beavers are herbivores and do not eat fish.

Though this beaver wasn't near a beaver dam, the animal is known for the ponds it creates by felling trees.

Beaver lodges have underwater entrances and are lined with hard mud which freezes in the winter and keeps predators out.

Beavers can live up to 34 years in the wild.

Beavers can be very aggressive and will defend their territory by biting.

Beavers might be carriers of giardia, which is gross.

Beavers have webbed back feet and a scaly tail, and their teeth have iron in them, which makes them wear out slower than other mammals.

They are the second largest rodent in the world after the capybara.
