Science! Hummingbird

Hummingbirds can visit 1000 flowers in an hour

They diversified as the Andes were being uplifted, and the most diverse populations of hummingbirds are still in the Americas

Aside from insects, a hummingbird in flight has the highest metabolic rate in the animal kingdom. Their heart rate can reach over 1,200 beats per minute

Unlike most birds, who only produce lift in the downstroke of the wing, hummingbirds can do it on the upstroke as well by inverting their wings

Hummingbirds can live more than a decade, which is a very long time for an animal with such a high metabolism.

Often appearing on either side of the sun-this one is on only one side-at the same degree as the sun

Commonly known as a sun dog, they more often than not appear white, though we tend to notice the rainbows

The red is always on the side closest to the sun.They are most often seen in winter because they are caused by refraction through ice crystals, as opposed to rainbows, which are refracted through water droplets
