Science! Supernumerary Rainbow Bands

Looking from my bedroom window just before sunset last week, I saw this:




I took several pictures before I noticed




There was more to it than just seven colors




This is a rainbow with supernumerary bands underneath it




These happen when water droplets of differing sizes refract light in different places




They are more common in fog than in rain and they are very ephemeral


These pictures were taken in about 7 minutes

I confess to a certain feeling of satisfaction. They weren't that easy to take and lots of them didn't turn out.
