Bonus: B-17 Flying Fortress 'Aluminum Overcast'

This craft never saw combat

Since the B-17 was retired right after WWII most of them were taken apart for scrap

The B-17G was used in both Europe and the Pacific

The markings on this B-17 commemorate a plane from the 398th Bomb Group which was shot down over France in 1944

The veterans of the 398th Bomb Group helped finance the purchase of this plane for B-17s Around the World

It was donated to the EAA by B-17s Around the World in 1979

At different times in the past it was used for surveying, crop spraying and hauling cattle

'Aluminum Overcast' is one of only 10 flight worthy B-17s in the world

Over 1 million flight miles logged

Made at Lockheed Vega, Burbank CA

Tubeless tires, with Young Ces for comparison

The lower hydrolics on the landing gear

Wiring for the landing gear hydrolics

Has one Studebaker 1820 engine and three Curtiss-Wright 1820-97 engines. I don't know which is which

Four engines, nine giant cylinders each

Engine detail

Prop detail

From the side

Detail of the exhaust system

Metal patch on the exhaust pipe

That's per engine
