Sunset over Yardley

From Sprague

Bonus: B-17 Flying Fortress bomb bay and ball turret

Up into the bay

100 lbs each. Kaboom.

Looking down through the doors

The walkway through the bomb bay is very, very thin

Finally, the ball turret

The door opened into the plane so the gunner could climb into it

The hydrolics. If it got damaged in action, the guy in the ball would be stuck, and possibly smashed on the runway when landing. They sent a nice letter to the family, though.

Only the small, short men could get into it

These were also used on the B-24

You don't pull the short straw, you are the short straw

Detail of the interior

Handle and gage

Bonus: B-17 Flying Fortress cockpit, crew and guns

This is a facsimile of the first gyroscopically stabilized analog computer. It was used by the bombardier

Navigator's desk

Bombardier's chart

Cockpit

The same, from above

Pilot's seat

From outside

Looking from the back of the plane to the front

Just inside the radio room. Not made for tall people

It's not the ball turret, but it's still pretty small

Browning M2

The window mount

The cocking handle

Air cooled, belt fed
